Dear Friends,

At S Magendran’s b/w photography exhibition ‘Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang’, he lets his series of photographs tell the story, as he himself has always been a shy and quiet young man.

With an impressive record of exhibitions in the last 13 years, S Magendran is now one of Malaysia’s rare photographers specialising in the field of dance.

Magen’s photographic story is part of Sutra Foundation’s first stage foray into 2025 – a contemporary modern Malaysian dance of the same title. Dance painting, drawing and photography have always been part of Sutra’s approach to integrate visual art, this time, photography in the public’s appreciation and love for the performing arts, an effort not always realised by funding bodies.

We were fortunate to have Ambassador of Germany to Malaysia, HE Dr Peter Blomeyer as Guest of Honour. An accomplished pianist himself, Peter Blomeyer gave an apt address profoundly expressing the creative process and intention of capturing the intense moment of time immortalised in Magen’s photographs.

Sutra dancers once again evoked highlights of the triple bill ‘Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang’.

Dancers performed amidst the sylvan Amphi-Sutra and in the studio giving life to the photographs on the walls. It was a night of creativity and fun in which the audience basked in the embrace of heightened emotional aura encapsulated in Sutra Gallery and garden.
