Sutra’s book Quintessential Sutra with photography by A. Prathap (Chennai-based senior photographer of Times of India) had a book release on the 7 August, 2015 which took place at Sutra House. Amidst packed audience, great cool weather with standing room only, the book release was formally launched by Malaysian film director U-Wei who made a rousing speech for Sutra’s achievement in the last 35 years, as the most consistently creative and high-profile arts institution in Malaysia. Guna, Dua Space and Sutra Dancers whose photographs are featured magnificently in this pictorial book gave inspiring performances as sneak previews of their new works for Diversity 2015, KL International Arts Festival. Speeches by Vimala Sundaram (producer for Sutra’s successful Stirring Odissi Festival 2008), Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat and Datuk Rosalind Ganendra surmarised Sutra’s achievement and the ‘importance of being Sutra’ in the present context of the commercialistic emphasis of culture and arts. Mentioned must be made on the excellent graphic-art direction by William Harald Wong of Moment Font. (Sutra’s relationship with WHW spans more than 30 years and have produced some of the great iconic images of Malaysian dance.) Articles by Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat and Dr Dinanath Pathy and also by Ramli Ibrahim found in the book gave important insights into the direction of Malaysian dance, specifically that of odissi and contemporary modern dance. Edited by Diana Khoo, Sutra’s quintessential artistic journeys 2005 – 2015 are immortalised pictorially with the help of photos from S. Magen, Sivarajah Natarajan and J. Abtin besides the stunning photos by A. Prathap. This well researched book with complete lists of Sutra’s exhibitions and performances from 2005 – 2015 updates the previous Ramli! Heart of Sutra. It has set the international standard of Malaysian dance and gave an impressive testament of Sutra’s unique journey as an independent cultural ambassador of Malaysian culture.
Excellent gift especially for corporates and individuals!
