‘QUINTESSENCE: RAMLI IBRAHIM & THE MPO’
AT DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS
The glorious 2013/14 season will close with a bang with out-of-this-world showcases via a pioneering collaboration between the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and a world renowned local dance maestro Datuk Ramli Ibrahim at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Themed Quintessence: Ramli Ibrahim and the MPO, these spellbinding performances are scheduled on Saturday, 21 June 2014 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 22 June 2014 at 3.00 p.m., set to bring local entertainment scene to the next level. The showcases will be led by Brazil-born maestro Fabio Mechetti, one of the most respected conductors in the USA.
Datuk Ramli joins the MPO’s impressive list of local collaborators after Tan Sri SM Salim, Dato’ Sheila Majid, Dato’ M Nasir, Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, Bobby Chen, Foo Mei Yi, Dato’ Yusni Hamid, Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro and Aishah.
These concerts will further affirm the MPO’s music versatility which transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, traditional, pop, jazz and contemporary works. Well into its 16th anniversary, the MPO, founded in 1998, has consistently impressed and inspired audience of all ages, performing approximately 100 concerts per season at its home, DFP. The MPO has also astounded audiences in Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam and Australia.
A living legend in his own right, Ramli has contributed immensely to the nation’s dance scene. As the country’s champion of dance, be it odyssey, bharatanatyam, makyong and modern, he has endeavoured to present his audience with an introduction to these exquisite art forms, locally and internationally. Trained in classical ballet, modern and Indian classical dances, Ramli describes his vocation as ‘a path following my bliss’ and that path has indeed led to many prestigious accolades including India’s Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and a Datukship from the Federal Government of Malaysia.
This year marks important milestones in his career; his aforementioned debut collaboration with the MPO and also a major production of Krishna, Love Reinvented (Odissi) presented in Kuala Lumpur, followed by an 8-city tour around Malaysia. Upcoming India and USA tours are scheduled to take place in September. Prior to this, Ramli and his dance troupe Sutra Foundation has created an impact at their previous performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Wall Street.
Through Sutra Foundation (a bastion of traditional and contemporary arts), Ramli nurtures a new generation of outstanding Malaysian dancers. It carries into the future the thread of his vision and strives to develop the breadth and depth of Malaysian performing and visual arts through stimulating the creative spirit of cross-cultural Malaysia.
In his debut showcases with the MPO, Ramli, together with the Sutra Foundation dancers, will dance to three seminal works; Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite and Ravel’s Shéhérazade (featuring soprano YiLing Chaing). These works represent a tapestry of romantic and transcendent encounters with the strangely exotic in both dance and music. The choreography, inspired by Asian dance vocabularies, will take the audience on a quintessence journey where the colours and movements of Asian modern dance are infused with the dazzling music of the great composers.
Don’t miss these special showcases of music and dance, only at DFP!
