Sutra Foundation is supported generously by MyNadi Foundation and ECM Libra Foundation in its second year of its Dance Outreach Program.

This outreach program offers training in Odissi outside of Kuala Lumpur under the personal mentorship of Datuk Ramli Ibrahim who will conduct this program with the assistance of senior dancers of Sutra Dance Theatre.

We believe that Indian classical dances have the power to transform and is capable of empowering youths – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Odissi, an exquisite classical dance from Eastern India has been successfully transplanted in Malaysia and serves as the dance discipline chosen to effect this transformation.

Through Odissi our students are exposed to life-long virtues such as discipline, commitment to self and also as participating members of a group/community.

We hope to inculcate and inspire the qualities of devotion, humility and sacrifice (seva) through the art of dance. These are qualities which are vital to character, community and nation building.

Over the years, through the process of practice and exposure to the challenges of performance, the ‘best of the self’ will be revealed to our dancers, together with the realisation of the inter-connectedness of all beings. Our method of training prepares the physical body through specially designed ‘warm-ups’. We emphasise on correct postures and anga-sudha (the perfection of form and lines) in a dancer. The format of classes is in the form of 4 Semesters per year, constituting 3 months per semester.
