An exhibition of paintings by Muhamad Suhaili
Muhamad Suhaili is no stranger to Sutra having contributed significantly to the making and designing of many of Sutra’s sets and props since the early 90’s.
Sutra House’s magnificent door frame, intricately framed mirrors, lamp-hangings and candle stands which give the Foundation its distinctive stamp, were designed and carved by Ali under the supervision of Sutra Trustee, Sivarajah Natarajan.
Ali’s traditional background, mainly as wood carver, mentored by Sivarajah Natarajan, informs his direction, style and subject matter of his first solo painting exhibition Antara Bayang dan Wayang (Between the Play of Shadows). Curated by Sivarajah Natarajan, Muhamad Suhaili’s works give another facet of this talented and sensitive craftsman, this time as a compelling painter of Wayang (Traditional Shadow-Theatre) in his first painting foray in the medium of acrylic on canvas.
Nostalgic memories of childhood of Wayang Kulit performances in the island of Lombok, Indonesia inspires this body of works. Ali’s two dimensional treatment of Wayang Kulit characters come to life in bright fauve colours embellished with intricate designs which lend the paintings a certain naivety, elegance and monumentality.
