Dear Friends,

The four-day research in Langkawi for Sutra Foundation’s next major production titled ‘Meniti Cakerawala’ to be staged in December 2024, has yielded many innovatively creative ideas. As the title suggests, the multi-media production will be themed on the less explored world of astrophysics and cosmology, inspired by the cosmic realm of Malaysia’s celebrated astrophysicist, Tan Sri Mazlan Othman.

This research, undertaken much in advance, aimed to get the ball rolling for composer Dr Valerie Ross, so that she would be able to experience first hand the workings of the Langkawi National Observatory (LNO). ‘Meniti Cakerawala’ will trace our cosmic connections using photos and videos taken from the LNO itself. The latter, strategically situated at the equator has the advantage of being able to observe both the Northern and Southern skies. A brainchild of Tan Sri Mazlan, the LNO is one of Malaysia’s best.

The research also took us on interesting geo site visits of the Macincang Range and Gunung Raya. From the latter we were able to view the impact craters of Kawah Mahsuri, the result of asteroids which had hit Langkawi some ten of millions years ago. Composer Valerie also insisted on recording Nature sounds in situ to add authenticity to her composition.

A multi-media production, ‘Meniti Cakerawala’ promises to be an exciting collaboration of several Malaysian ‘giants’ from the literary, visual arts, theatre and music world. The culmination of the Langkawi sojourn was a stunningly sizzling sunset overlooking Tepur Island over a splendid Ambong Ambong cuisine. Our Langkawi haven, Ambong Ambong was where the launch of the book Cosmic Connections was held last year.
