Dear friends,
Guru Shanmuga Sundaram is an established bharatanatyam dancer, based in Chennai, known for his dignified demeanour and subdued abhinaya. He is recognised internationally and has performed worldwide.
As a guru he is sought for his expertise in wielding the nattuvangam and has recently gained popularity for his successful work on empowering the transgender community with bharatanatyam.
He was a disciple of the late Guru KJ Sarasa and for more than a decade have been presenting a popular annual dance festival dedicated to his Guru, KJ Sarasa.
In the last five years Shanmugam has been mentored by Guru Smt Chitra Visweswaran and this has added another dimension and further enhanced his evolution as an artist.
“Rasānubhava”, delves into the myriad hues of human emotions through the art of Bharatanatyam. The presentation marks the second of an ongoing series dedicated to the “Vazhuvoor Sampradaya”, wherein the dance compositions of his revered gurus, KJ Sarasa and Padma Shri Chitra Visweswaran are meticulously demonstrated and unraveled.
Shanmugam, whose mother was Malaysia born, has been a long collaborator of Sutra and had been featured in several of Sutra’s productions.
