Dear Friends,
Dense with Bha-Ra-Ta set the tone of what is to be expected of Sutra’s ‘bharatanatyam faculty’. There has been much hardwork in bringing Sutra’s standard to its former bharatanatyam heydays. And Rathimalar and Ishwar, the two teachers have considerably achieved the momentum for this revival.
Two distinct groupings come to the fore: the first group consists of the young ones who remind us that there is a future to invest and that there is much work to be done and the second group – the more experienced dancers who show much improvement which have been achieved through hardwork and guidance.
Three works come to the fore in the performance: the elegant and contained Brahma Sandhi taught by Ishwar; the complex and multi-layered classic Kamas Varnam which was wonderfully re-arranged and crafted by Rathimalar as a group work; and finally the scintillating Brindavani Thillana of Jayanthi Subramaniam.
All this is so exciting for the next Sutra bharatanatyam performance which we hope will bring another level of artistry from Sutra bharatanatyam dancers. But this will depend on how they will be guided for their next appearance on stage.
