‘Tradition’ is often a fraught concept. On one hand it emphasises on the continuity of specific beliefs, values, or behaviour and thus attributing to the ‘identity’ of a community or civilization; on the other hand, it is prone to change. Tradition transmutes itself under varied socio-political and cultural forces and propitiates new meanings. This talk titled “Maneuvering Tradition : Contemporary Visual Expressions from South Asia” brings into light and analyses the creative endeavours of South Asian artists who have engaged with tradition through appropriation, assimilation, interrogation, or criticism in relation to their socio-cultural contexts and experiences. It has thus not only given rise to novel approaches of cultural engagements, but new forms of visual expressions and language relevant to contemporary times.
