Dear Friends,
Sutra Foundation presents NATURE on edge of Cityscapes, a painting exhibition by Odiyan artist Kishore Sahoo.
This is Kishore’s 7th solo exhibition with Sutra.
A figurative painter, Kishore normally eschews social commentary in his works, but this time he has chosen a theme close to our hearts. It is a phenomenon that can be discerned even in our very backyard.
In fact the primary image in this poster is inspired by Sutra’s very own precinct.
At Sutra, we once counted as many as 7 attractive virile jungle fowls, contently perched and resting on concrete fence amidst our sylvan foliage. Somehow, our neighbourhood near the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, became a sanctuary for a thriving brood of beautiful jungle fowls.
Kishore’s theme touches on this very poignancy of the vulnerability and survival of Nature against the encroaching background of aggressive human settlement and civilisation. The sensitive ones among us feel the survival drama of kindred beings, be they birds, monkeys, monitor lizards or even tigers, which are being pushed to the corner, by development and highways, estranged from their natural habitat.
Kishore’s keen sense of perception sees humanity, juxtaposed in cubicles of high rise buildings, starved of the natural elements, at the same time endeavouring to secure their personal spaces, to engage in activities that reaffirm their humanity. The act of communing with nature is increasingly a challenging vocation.
Having traveled in many parts of India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bali, Nepal and Thailand – Kishore, observing the phenomena around him, transposes these images against the iconic panorama of his favourite cities.
