Dear friends,
The Tanjore Quartets Diaries
Lecture Demonstration by Ishwar Muthkumaran
15 July 2023, Saturday | 8pm
Sutra House (12, Persiaran Titiwangsa 3)
(Limited seats)
We rarely hear about the dance styles pre-1940s when it comes to Bharatanatyam.
However, at Sutra, dancer Ishwar Muthkumaran will present a lecture demonstration titled “The Tanjore Quartets Diaries” that sheds light on the bedrock of vintage Bharatanatyam. Ishwar speaks from first hand having been a disciple of his guru, Shri Chandrasekhar Pillai, son of the illustrious late Kittappa Pillai, a direct lineage of the Tanjore Quartet.
This lecture-demonstration explores stories of a profound relationship between a student and a hereditary Nattuvanar (traditional dance teacher) spanning 22 years.
It also highlights the sacred pieces that have been safeguarded by hereditary dance families, providing a glimpse into the rich and rare history of this evolving art form.
Ishwar, a seasoned practitioner, has been passing on his legacy to the Bharatanatyam students of Sutra who will also be participating in the lecture demonstration, showcasing traditional works and contributing to the overall presentation.
By doing so, they continue the tradition and contribute to the preservation of Bharatanatyam for future generations.
All are welcome!
