Dear Friends,
Sutra’s relation with Vedantist HH Swami Brahmananda Saraswati goes a long way – for more than 3 decades. The Dhyana Ashram he founded is very much the sanctuary to enable him to perpetuate his immeasurable service and guidance, to empower the youths of the community. We have seen many young men emerged from this institution as upstanding and responsible citizens to continue Swami’s good work.
It is a pleasure for Sutra to perform again here and maintain our connection with this gurukula, which has become a potent centre of Vedanta in Malaysia. This knowledge represents the timeless wisdom India offers to the world – a universal spirituality without the baggage of religion, that is able to withstand the onslaught of Time.
Jaya Ram, Sutra Foundation’s newest production of Odissi, fresh from its return from the Konark Festival early this December, is about to be performed in Kulim, North Peninsular of Malaysia. Kulim neighbours the island of Langkawi, the Malay version of Sri Lanka, referencing to the abode of Ravana. It is also close by to Bujang Valley, the oldest Hindu-Buddhist archaeological site in SouthEast Asia which has a strong connection with Kalinga, the old name for Odisha.
Jaya Ram, is also about to tour the Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) right after Kulim for their final performance, for 2022.
We hope to see all of you in Kulim for Jaya Ram. To perform the myth of Rama, on Christmas, is a bit of ‘deja vu’ for me. It somewhat reaffirms the multicultural ethos of this beloved nation of ours.
I remember once years ago when Pondicherry-based photographer Lalit Verma presented Odissi, Indian classical dance performed by a Malay, myself for the Honourable Governor of Chennai Barnala, who was a Sikh, on Christmas day.
This is Diversity in Unity at it’s best manifestation!
Warmest regards,

Dear Friends,
In the true spirit of multicultural Malaysia, we’ve just realised that a Malay is presenting Jaya Ram, a homage to Hero of The Ramayana, in the Indian classical dance of Odissi, performed in an Ashram (Kulim), during Christmas!
Wishing everybody regardless of race & religion, the joy of celebration of Christmas.
At the same time, may our new leadership bring the changes we hope for a better Malaysia!
