Dear Friends,
Sutra Foundation in association with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose India Cultural Centre (NSCBICC), Kuala Lumpur, is proud to present a talk by cultural catalyst Anita Ratnam, on ‘Survival Kit for Dancers and Dance collectives’.
Anita Ratnam, in the forefront of contemporary dance-theatre in India, is herself a dance-icon and founder of Narthaki.com, a pioneer dance portal, recognised for putting Indian Dance within the global gateway of dance circuits. Besides being a dancer and choreographer herself, Anita is an excellent dance entrepreneur who co-founded the first contemporary Indian dance festival, The Other Festival, in Chennai, which run for more than ten years.
Having one leg in Eastern dance tradition and the other in the face-paced Western dance milieu, Anita has kept abreast with the current developments in cross and trans-cultural theatre creative activities. She is aware of the pitfalls and challenges faced by artists engaging in the multi-verse challenges within Asian theatre worlds.
In a hyper politically correct world dancers – teachers – patrons – audiences must learn and embrace the seismic changes to the artistic world. Identities, DEI – diversity, equity, inclusion – the rapid rise of gender fluid voices has made the transmission of traditional cultures fraught with landmines.
What should we know?
How can we navigate this new world when every word seems like a loaded gun?
Certainly, Anita is not just about Indian Dance but is in the position to contextualise the cross-currents faced by artistes and dancers and in advising them how to survive in an increasingly difficult performing arts world.
We recommend this talk not only to Indian dancers but also to contemporary modern dancers who are faced with having to negotiate their artistic integrity in a highly commercialised and digitised art world.
