Dear Friends,
Last year Sutra Foundation presented an excellent exhibition of paintings by Seremban-based artist, Vasanthi Naidu. I was touched and impressed by Vasanthi’s compelling works which have an underlying spirituality that reflected her awareness of the integration of Nature with all beings.
Vasanthi also intimated to me of her commitment (with her supportive husband), of helping to run a ‘Rumah Perlindungan Wanita dan Kanak Kanak’ in Seremban. It was her ‘seva/service’ to the community.
Eventually, I was delighted to be able to fulfil her invitation to visit this shelter home in Seremban for abused women and children, of which she was the Chairperson.
We were joined by Chandrika and Radha, two senior volunteers with the Shelter Home.
The Home is situated in the heart of Seremban, a sprawling three-storied bungalow house with excellent spaces surrounded by sylvan trees.
I told Vasanthi that the Home has the potential of being a happy centre for the women and children to heal from the traumas of Life’s beating. I offered freely my own ‘creative’ ideas.
Besides the essential funds, what the centre needs is not only shelter but a judicious and interesting flow of activities that would benefit the women and children who come to seek shelter. Needless to say, it is essential that the shelter home has dedicated and passionate staff and volunteers with ideas. It needs the contribution of people who can walk the talk and make the place a bustling home where the community can share their communal life and activities.
Initially, we may need to bring like-minded people to the centre to confer what can be done to add value to a potentially interesting shelter-home centre. The place waits for the right activities to come alive.
Ramli
